This article states that "the
six butcher shops are now
supervised by five mashgi-
chim." The Association of
Kosher Meat Dealers informs
me that they have never seen
more than two .. .
The article claims that the
Vaad has investigated certain
suppliers in Illinois and In-
diana which it rejected
because they did not meet the
high stanards of the Vaad. If
this is true, that information
should be made public for the
benefit of the entire com-
munity .. .
The article states that "the
State of Michigan's Kosher
food law allows the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis to grant and
to remove kosher certifica-
tion." This statement gives
the impression that the Vaad
is somehow sanctioned by the
State of Michigan. The Vaad
enjoys no such exclusivity. If
it did, six other rabbinic
groups would not be able to
function in Michigan.

Rabbi Jack Goldman
I was surprised that Mr.
Wanetik would tell the mayor
of Oak Park to "butt out" of
a discussion involving her
community.
Your article on Rabbi
Meyerowitz announced that
B'nai Moshe intends to move
because of Oak Park's
demographics; why should
Mr. Wanetik complain when
Mayor Rothstein responds?
Demographics is indeed a
strange reason for a
synagogue to leave the Oak
Park area. If B'nai Moshe en-
visions a rosier future —
younger, more affluent, more
generous members? — in
geh
West Bloomfield,
gezinteheit! But don't try to
argue that the residents of
Oak Park, Huntington
Woods, and Southfield can't
support a shul in Oak Park.
My family were active
members of B'nai Moshe for
11 years from 1976, and we
shall never forget the welcom-
ing spirit of the clergy and
many of the members. I would
not soil these columns with
an account of the sordid
events which led to our depar-
ture. However, it became clear
to us and other young
families in the area that the
administration planned to
dispense with the rabbi and
move the shul. Since B'nai
Moshe didn't see Oak Parkers
like us as part of its future, we
switched.
