the letter bombs are large
white envelopes containing
Christmas and New Year's
greetings and several dozen
grams of explosives, sufficient
to cause serious injuries to
face or hands.
The envelopes appear to
have been addressed at ran-

were mailed from Istanbul on
Dec. 23. The addresses were
printed on stickers and the
envelopes bore the return ad-

Koch Hits
Racist Remarks

New York (JTA) — New
York City Mayor Edward
Koch last week denounced
the black pastor of a local
Roman Catholic church for
making what Koch called
"racist and anti-Semitic"
remarks at a rally.
Koch called a news con-
ference at City Hall at which
he provided copies of a
videotape and transcripts of
remarks by the Rev.
Lawrence Lucas, pastor of the
Resurrection Roman Catholic
Church in Harlem.
A local television news sta-
tion broadcast the remarks by
Lucas. "Those who are killing
us in the classroom, I do not
need to tell you from what
persuasion they come from,
you just have to look at the
board of education and it
looks like the Knesset in
Israel," he said. The board
has only one Jewish member,
Koch said, former City Coun-
cilman Edward Sadowsky.

AJC Approves
Menorah Ban

New York — The American
Jewish Congress told a
United States District Court
in Iowa last month that an ex-
isting state policy of banning
all displays and symbols from
public property should be con-
stitutionally applied to bar
the display of a menorah at
the Iowa State House.
The AJCongress amicus or
friend-of-the court brief was
filed in the case of Lubavitch
of Iowa v. Walters, a suit
originally brought prior to
Chanukah, 1986. Initiated by
the Lubavitch movement, the
case sought to overturn a
decision by state authorities
denying permission to place a
large Menorah on the
grounds of the Iowa State
House.
