Lipstadt Resigns From
Brandeis-Bardin Institute

Los Angeles — Dr. Deborah
Lipstadt has resigned after
serving only a year and a half
as director of the Brandeis-
Bardin Institute, a major
educational institution in
southern California.
She is the third person to
hold that position in the last
five years and is one of several
directors of major Jewish or-
ganizations who have either
resigned or been fired of late,
citing excessive pressure from
lay boards in day-to-day deci-
sion making.
A dynamic lecturer, former
professor of modern Jewish
history at UCLA and author
of a highly praised study of
the role of the American press
during the Holocaust, Beyond
Belief Lipstadt felt con-
strained by the lay leadership
of Brandeis-Bardin who she
said was over-involved in ad-
ministrative policies.
She has not set a departure
date yet and added that she
chose to step down while she
and the 60-member lay board
were still on good terms. John
Rauch, president of the in-
stitution, told the Jewish
Journal of Los Angeles that
the majority of the executive
committee wanted Lipstadt to
remain and that he was very
disappointed by her decision.
Lipstadt says she hopes to
spend a year lecturing and
writing before taking another

permanent position. She is
considering writing about the
relationship between profes-
sional and lay leadership of
Jewish organizations, she
said, because she is concern-
ed about the increasing
number of problems in that
area.
In the past year, such
clashes over who determines
policy, direction and person-
nel matters for organizations
has led to change in leader-
ship at the American Jewish
Committee, Bnai Brith Inter-
national and, most recently,
New York's 92nd YM/YWHA,
where Ira Silverman will be
leaving his post after a brief
tenure.

Insulin Pill
Researched

Jerusalem — A team of
researchers at the Hadassah-
Hebrew University Medical
Center in Jerusalem report
they are close to developing a
pill that will enable diabetics
to get daily doses of insulin by
mouth.
Dr. Hanoch Bar-On, head of
the Diabetes Research Unit
at the Medical Center, said
his team currently is ex-
perimenting with both a pill
and soft gel capsule that
would free diabetics from the
necessity of daily insulin
injections.
