. . . "Being an owner of four
restaurants leaves little time
for me to enjoy the neighbor-
ing competition. Yet, one
question that I am often ask-
ed by friends and customers is
what are my favorite local
restaurants.
"Detroit and its suburbs are
graced with an unbelievable
amount of talented chefs and
fine restaurateurs. I could
probably write an unending
article on this subject, but un-
fortunately space does not
allow me to do so. Therefore,
I will only tell you about the
few fine dining restaurants
that I believe • are truly
special.
"First, I must explain that
I seldom try a restaurant in
its first year. Few restaurants
excel in their infancy, and
when you have only a limited
amount of opportunities to
enjoy an evening out, you
don't want to waste them on
a restaurant that's not quite
ready. Therefore, restaurants
such as The Whitney and
Opus One have not been con-
sidered because I haven't
tried them yet.
"The Lark in West Bloom-
field and the Van Dyke Place
in Detroit are perhaps my two
favorites. Both offer impec-
cable service, incomparable
cuisine, and beautiful set-
tings. The Lark has its own
herb and flower garden that
makes the restaurant par-
