Truth
Continued from Page 33
tion
to be answered is: "How
will the greatest good be ad-
vanced — by telling the truth
or deviating in some measure
from it?"
Jewish tradition presents a
remarkable legend about the
creation of man at the very
beginning of time. The angels
in heaven were divided into
two opposing camps on this
question. The group of angels
representing Love said, "Let
man be created, for he will do
works of love." The group
representing Truth said, "Let
him not be created, for he will
practice deception." Those in
favor of Justice said, "Let
man be created, for he will do
justice." The group in favor of
Peace said, "Let him not be
created, for he will be all con-
troversy."
The angels were equally
balanced with advocates of
Justice and Love on one side,
and those espousing Truth
and Peace on the other. What
did God do? He seized Truth,
hurled it to the earth, and
then He made man.
A modern interpreter of the
legend commented that if ab-
solute truth were to prevail,
man could not exist. But, on
the other hand, the world can-
not endure without truth.
Man must try to live by truth,
but there are times when
truth unwisely and unjustly
applied can be injurious to
human existence. So truth
must be cast to earth, at least
for that brief moment. This is
a difficult doctrine to follow,
but then again, there are oc-
casions when life presents us
with vexing and conflicting
choices.
The moral person not only
affirms great ideals, but he
also appraises their conse-
quences and follows those
which will enhance and
enrich human life.

Lubavitch Give
Reagan Menorah
Washington (JTA) —
Leaders of the American
Friends of Lubavitch
presented a Chanukah
menorah to President Reagan
during a meeting last week.
Avraham Shemtov, nation-
al director, termed the
15-minute meeting "the
friendliest" that the group
had ever held with Reagan.
He said they meet at least
twice a year with him, on
Chanukah and in celebration
of the birthday of Lubavitch
leader Rabbi Menachem
Schneerson in April.
The group also lit the
30-foot menorah standing on
the Ellipse, near the White
House.
