— to use fitness to improve your life, not
your entire existence?'
Imagine if you had to ask for blood to save the life of someone you love.

Oak Park. As a youngster he worked in
his parents' store, Lewis Artists Supply.
"I was always interested in graphic
arts," says Lewis who believes his
current interest in newsletters began
there. At Oak Park High School Lewis
was number one on the ski team, and
he was a ski instructor in • 1978. Lewis
took a year off to ski in Aspen. "It was
fun for a short time," reflects Lewis. At
the University of Michigan Lewis played
intramural sports and received a degree
in exercise and sports science. After
graduating from college, Lewis went to
California. In California he noted the
popularity of Jake Steinfeld, a personal
fitness trainer. Lewis then decided to
develop the idea of personal fitness
trainers in the metro Detroit area. "The
first part of my business plan was to see
Dick Purtan and give him an offer he
couldn't refuse. I offered to train him for
three months for free, if I could say I
was his trainer?' Lewis then began
developing his clientele — Sonya
Friedman and several chief executive
officers of major local corporations. In
November 1986 Lewis was featured as
the personal trainer of Linda and
Robert Taubman in Vogue magazine.
When Lewis is not working out, he's
busy publishing a newsletter for six
companies including Olga's Kitchen and
Arbor Drugs. Detroit Monthly magazine
rated him the best Detroit exercise guru
in 1986. Lewis also plans on writing a
book on cholesterol. Lewis personally
works out with weights, and he can
benchpress 315 pounds.

MARTHA STEWART
Media personnel, including
SUZY FARBMAN of Detroit
Monthly magazine and
PEGGY DAITCH of Vogue
magazine, recently had
breakfast with entertain-
ment maven MARTHA
STEWART at the K-mart
World Headquarters.
Stewart, the author of
many entertainment books,
is the spokesperson for K-
mart's new Home Fashion
Division. Stewart offered
many tips on hosting a suc-
cessful party. "Don't be ner-
vous, make lists, organize
and categorize?' Stewart is
always organizing her work
— she just sent out all of
RALPH LAUREN'S holiday
gifts.
TEDDY BEARS
LORRETA LORION'S
children shop at Bloomfield
Plaza was the recent site of
hundreds of teddy bears.
Lorion hosted the fourth
annual teddy bear contest,
with categories such as the
most cuddly, glamorous,
sophisticated and old-
fashioned. Lorion then
donated one bear to
Children's Hospital for
every teddy entered in the
contest. Over 300 bears
were donated to Children's
Hospital. MARGERY
