Orthodox Jewish Leader
Rabbi Leo Jung Dies
New York — Rabbi Leo
Jung, a leading Orthodox rab-
bi who wrote or edited 37
books, died Dec. 19 at age 95.
Born in what is now
Czechoslovakia, Rabbi Jung
studied at the Unviersities of
Vienna and Berlin, Cam-
bridge University and the
University of London, where
he earned his doctorate. He
was educated at yeshivot in
Hungary and in Berlin,
where he was ordained in
1920 at the Hildesheimer
Rabbinical Seminary.
He came to the U.S. in 1920
to serve a congregation in
Cleveland. Two years later he
was asked to become the rab-
bi of the Jewish Center of
New York, and has been its
spiritual leader ever since. He
published Judaism in a
Changing World in 1939 to
tell the story of the Jewish
people. Later he helped bring
more than 9,000 refugees to
the U.S.
Dr. Jung was a professor of
ethics at the former Yeshiva
College and later was presi-
dent of the Jewish Academy of
Arts and Sciences, which he
helped to organize. He also
was a founding trustee of the
Jewish Braille Institute.
He played prominent roles
in many organizations, in-
cluding the Synagogue Coun-
cil of America, the Rabbinical
Council of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
and the Joint Distribution
Committee. When New York
State established its Kosher
Food Advisory Board in 1940,
Dr. Jung was chairman.
