ahead to the future of the pro-
gram. He hopes to have bet-
ter practice facilities next
season, although the
volunteer coach will have to
begin working on that now if
he is to succeed. He also
would like to see every boy
who wants to play get the op-
portunity to do so. "Even now,
there's still a couple guys in
the school that they've tried
to get to play — some of the
better players in the school —
but they can't, because they
have too many academic com-
mitments. And that's gonna
be their downfall — it depends
which way you look at it —
but that's gonna be their pro-
blem for years to come, is that
a lot of the guys don't have
the time to commit to basket-
ball!'
Why have Yashinsky and
Stober taken on this task as
volunteers? "We're sort of
frustrated basketball
players," explains Yashinsky.
"So we thought this would be
a good angle to try to relive
our childhood."
He also feels the team,
which is Akiva's only active
varsity sports unit, is good for
the boys. "I think the kids
need to get more well-
rounded. Now they hit the
books and they have a long
school-day. When they get
home they hit the books. And
I think it's important for
them and their families to
realize that it's important to
stay in physical shape.
Nowadays, as a physician, I
see it all the time. The kids
these days are less physically
adept, they're heavier than
they were before. Their
physical shape is poorer. And
it's been borne out by
statistics. They study three
year-olds, they study 10 year-
olds and even 17 year-olds.
They're not in as good a shape
as they were when thekids
were growing up. When their
parents are out jogging and
playing tennis at the health
club, these kids are sitting in
front of the television and
eating munchies, growing fat.
And I think it's important
that these kids get involved in
athletics, because I don't
think they are, as much as
the public school kids.
"Their parents have plenty
of time for athletics, but the
kids, I think, lose out a little
bit and they only start to get
in shape when they're 30-and-
up!'
