make Brooks fans gag with
delight and the unsuspecting
just gag.
Surely, this whole comical
career has been a lark. But
ask Brooks about being fun-
ny in a funny business and
he'll tell you, as he did one
reporter, \"my trick is that I'm
a good, serious writer. That's
my secret weapon. I sit with
the writer and script for a
very long time before we're
ready to go into production."

And how he produces. Years
after The Producers first
burst onto the screen, people
still talk about Springtime for
Hitler, the movie's irreverent
big-production number. Not
so coincidentally, it seems,
Brooks has a tendency for hit-
ting on Hitler, cartooning him
in other films and even a
video, The Hitler Rap.

Brooks is noted in the
business as a man of integri-
ty; he's not one to give others
a song and dance — unless of
course, that's what a movie
calls for. "Ever since I was 4
years old, I wanted to be a
song and dance man," he has
said. "When I was in the ar-
my, everyone had a picture of
Betty Grable in their lockers.
I had a picture of black-and-
white wing-tipped shoes."
Shuffling projects is part of
the production schedule for
the ever busy Brooks. But
then, he had to learn early on
how to think and work fast —
he was one of that stellar
stable of writers for Sid
Caesar's Your Show of Shows,
trading quips and barbs with
such notables as Neil Simon
and Howie Morris.
Brooks' latest acting stint
in Spaceballs is a double
challenge: He is both the "un-
skroobulous" United States
President Skroob and a Yoda-
like yenta, Yogurt the
Magnificent.
Yogurt was less than a
natural for Brooks, who suf-
fered an allergic reaction to
the gold make-up needed for
the part: "A classic example
of Jewish gilt."
Brooks is a classic example
of unbridled talent making
its mark. Whethet winning
an Oscar for a short film he
wrote and directed (The
Critic) or playing executive
(television's Get Smart, the
film The Fly), the Brooklyn-
born and one-time Borsht
Belt Brooks seems happy to
be back on top, which is
where Spaceballs has landed
him.
He wears his crown of com-
ic chaos well. As his real
character revealed in History
of the World, Part I, Brooks
knows it's good to be king.
