SWEET 4
LORRAINE'S

two words you're searching
for all your life."
From the moment he steps
up to the mike, Sonny is on,
a blizzard of barometric
pressures, partly cloudy skies,
and precipitation. While ac-
centing the weather in one
part of the state, country or
even the world, he's likely to
alter his own accent, tossing
out the temperatures in
French or German.
But the language Sonny
says he'd really like to learn
is Hebrew. "It's a language
you ought to know," he says.
But other than a fascina-
tion with Hebrew, he's had lit-
tle association with the
Jewish community.
Since his bar mitzvah days,
Sonny has not had strong con-
tact with Jewish organiza-
tions. "I'm not a religious
man. And my wife (who is not
Jewish) isn't a religious
woman. We're quite self-
oriented. We enjoy each
other's company. I'm not
much of a joiner."
When he's not on the air,
Sonny's likely in the air, fly-
ing his private plane (a
Cessna 210) to speaking
engagements around the
state or just taking it for a
flight.
Aside from flying and year-
ly vacations to Paris, Sonny's
often found on the golf course.
"My handicap is the golf
club," jokes Sonny.
A bookworm and a big
sports fan ("Well, not that big
— I'm only five-foot-eight"),
Sonny keeps pretty busy.
Aside from his daily weather
report and several commer-
cials presently running in
three different states, he's in
the planning stages of Eliots's
Almanac," brief syndicated
radio segments featuring tan-
tilizing cocktail trivia and
"useless information," rang-
ing from the derivation of the
term "limelight" to why a
rabbit's foot should bring
good luck. If the show's a suc-
cess, "I'll never have to work
another day in my life," grins
Sonny.
Having already written one
book, Eliot's Ark, a collection
of fact and fiction on animals,
Sonny is now thinking about
compiling a second book of all
his zany sayings.
Despite his banter about
striking it rich and retiring
early, Sonny says he loves
what he does. "Working is
fun. Notworking is not fun."
When asked about his
future plans, Sonny again
repeats, "Live while you live,
then die and be done with it."
Asked about his age for a
seventh time, he finally ad-
mits, "120." As for his full
head of hair? "It's half mine
and half not."
