Station manager John Hin- ton said that McCarthy discontinued the weekly call- in program after two shows due to sabotage at the station in West Jordan, Utah, includ- ing the destruction of a satellite dish. Hinton also cited death threats against his family and the station's advertisers. But Hinton also acknowl- edged that the station had lost almost all of its adver- tisers since the "Aryan Na- tions" show aired Dec. 5. The show espoused the views of the Aryan Nations, a white supremacist group that ad- vocates turning the Pacific Northwest into an all-white bastion. McCarthy, 37, report- edly blamed the "liberal- Marxist-homosexual Zionist coalition" for his problems at the station. He also claimed to have received death threats from the Jewish Defense League. Utah Gov. Norman Ban- gerter and Salt Lake City Mayor Palmer DePaulis con- demned the Aryan Nations for its recruitment efforts in Utah and for broadcasting its message. On Dec. 5, the newly formed Utahans Against Aryan Na- tions held a rally against the show in a nearby park. Hinton - said McCarthy might reconsider broad- casting at a later date, and that McCarthy had a con- stitutional right to buy air time at the station. McCarthy prepaid KZZI $5,200 for a year's programm- ing for "Aryan Nations Hour." He had begun broadcasting at the station in July with his "Counter-Marxist Hour." McCarthy announced the change in programming Nov. 14, with Aryan Nations leader "Rev." Richard Butler as his guest. Butler was also on the Dec. 5 program. Butler, 69, leader of the Aryan Nations-Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, lives on a closed compound near Hayden Lake, Idaho. He reportedly broadcast the Aryan Nations doctrine on the air, saying, "Hitler was a great man. Racism is good. The Holocaust never happen- ed, it's all a hoax. And the mongoloid Jew hybrid must be separated out of the white Aryan Nations." He is free on bail after be- ing indicted in Arkansas last year on federal charges of at- tempting to overthrow the U.S. government. McCarthy has said he pre- fers the appellation "white separatist" to "white supremacist," and broadcast his arguments for separating the races into "homelands?' White supremacist groups have drawn maps indicating regions for the white and black races, and called the Eastern Seaboard area "Z.O.G." for "Zionist Occupa- tional Government." The Jewish population in the Salt Lake City area is 2,400. Rick Trank of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, which has been monitoring developments at the station, noted that the station had lost advertisers since first broadcasting the show, and was drawing the ire of listeners. At the Wiesenthal Center's request, Rep. John Dingell (D- Mich.) has contacted the Federal Communications Commission, which is exam- ining the matter. A month ago, the FCC said it saw no "clear and present danger" from the "Aryan Nations Hour." "It's our position that this KZZI incident could repeat itself in other cities unless some corrective action is taken by the FCC," Trank said. Trank appeared on a KABC radio talk show in Los Angeles with Hinton, who contended the First Amend- ment right allowed him to broadcast the hate program- ming. When Trank brought up the matter of Alan Berg, the Denver talk show host killed in 1984 by members of The Order, an Aryan Nations af- filiate group, Hinton said that Berg "antagonized the Aryan Nations by verbally assault- ing them." The newspapers — the Miami Jewish Tribune and the Miami Times — are publishing each other's opi- nion columns on issues of con- cern to blacks and Jews.
