Two Scholars
Get Israel Prize

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
1987 Israel Prize for Jewish
studies has been awarded to
two Israeli scholars, Rabbi
Adin Steinzalz and Prof.
Moshe Goshen-Gottstein,
Education Minister Yitzhak
Navon announced Dec. 15.
. ■ The presentations will be
made in Jerusalem next April
22, Israel's Independence
Day.
Steinzalz, 50, was selected
for his monumental work on
the Babylonian Talmud.
Nineteen volumes of his an-
notated text and commen-
taries have been published so
far.
Goshen-Gottstein, 62, will
receive the prize for his
biblical scholarship, transla-
tions and commentaries and
his study of the development
of Hebrew and other Semitic
languages.

Lerner Allowed
To Emigrate

New York (JTA) — Prof.
Alexander Lerner of Moscow,
an internationally known
scientist and one of the
longest-term refuseniks left
in the Soviet Union, was told
Monday he could emigrate.
Lerner receive a phone call
Monday from the OVIR
emigration bureau in Moscow
saying he had permission to
leave for Israel. Lerner's son,
Vladimir, and Vladimir's wife
and child also were told they
could leave.

Lerner, 74, known for his
work in the field of
cybernetics, has been waiting
since 1971 to go to Israel. He
has been refused permission
to emigrate several times on
"state secrecy."
