Adventure
Center To Close

The Fresh Air Society's
Tamarack Adventure Center
will close its doors Monday
forever, unless a new site can
be found.
The agency's camp-in-the-
city program, the Adventure
Center opened last Feb. 15 in
the former Chatham super-
market building located on
the Northwestern Hwy. ser-
vice drive next to the
Glassman Oldsmobile dealer-
ship in Southfield. The
building was used to provide
children with an opportunity
to meet other Jewish children
while experiencing camp-
style activities such as arts
and crafts, a ropes course, in-
door sports and a sand-filled
playground. The building also
was available for rental to
groups and for birthday
parties.
Jeff Metz, Fresh Air assis-
tant executive director, said
the termination of the Adven-
ture Center's lease was the
reason for its closing. "It was
an experimental program.
The facility was given to us
for a limited time." Metz said
the building was leased to the
Fresh Air Society by Ramco-
Gershenson, owners of the
property, "for a very minimal
fee."
Fresh Air Society Executive
Director Sam Fisher said he'd
like to continue the project at
another site, but "we have
nothing potentially in mind."
Fisher said he hoped the
agency could find another
building that could become
permanent "so we don't have
to be in and out."
After seeing more than 600
persons attend the special
"Chanukah Inside-Out"
celebration Sunday at the
Adventure Center co-
sponsored with Jewish Ex-
periences for Families and
The Jewish News, Fisher said
there is a "tremendous need"
in the community for a camp-
in-the-city program. "We
definitely think there is a
need in the future," he said.
