One of the issues that Mrs.
Dukakis talked forcefully
about was her husband's
commitment to Israel.
"He supports Israel to tht
fullest," she said. "He would
work to maintain appropria-
tions to Israel, especially
when it comes to its defense.
He feels strongly that Israel
should be able to defend itself
and that Israel should be able
to negotiate with the other
Arab nations."
When it comes to a Pales-
tinian homeland, Mrs.
Dukakis said that there can't
be any real negotiations until
peace is made with Israel and
Israel is formally recognized
by the appropriate nations.
The word is that Reagan re-
moved Kitty Dukakis from
the Holocaust Commission
because she is a Democrat.
But she still remains active in
Jewish groups such as the
Anti-Defamation League and
even Hadassah. She has even
been on missions to Israel
and Moscow.
Mrs. Dukakis is the daugh-
ter of Jane and Harry Ellis
Dickson. Her father is the
first violinist for the Boston
Symphony and associate
director of the Symphony
Hall Youth Concerts. She has
no formal Jewish education
even though both of her
grandparents were Orthodox.
Both she and Michael Du-
kakis attended heavily
Jewish Brookline High
School. They didn't get to-
gether, however, until after
her first marriage ended in
California. They were fixed up
for a date, she said, when her
future husband was talking
about running for the state
legislature. And yes, there
were some misgivings about
the intermarriage, mostly on
his side of the family.
"I am Jewish and I feel
strongly about my tradition,"
she said. "I belong to a tem-
ple and I'm active there. I
took my first trip to Israel in
1976 and I've been there five
times."
"I think being the first Jew-
ish first lady is an exciting
idea," she said. "I'm happy
about it. Being Jewish has
been a plus for me. I feel a
strong attachment to Israel
and that comes across during
the campaign. Also, I've
taken a major role in my hus-
band's campaign. I'm excited -
about all of this." ❑
