"Israel's three-and-a-half million Jews carry the burden of the remaining billions, while all of world Jewry represents only two percents of the budget," said Avineri. He maintained that overemphasis of the financial link has added to the conflict between Israeli and Diaspora Jews, and said the "cash nexus" needs to be replaced by a "people nexus!' A "peo- ple nexus," he said, demands that aliyah becomes a priori- ty in America and Israel, with Jewish students and families being encouraged to spend at least a year in Israel. Avineri appeared forthright in des- cribing Israel's drawbacks — saying it was neither the safest nor the most pleasant place to live. But he said that Israel offered what no other country could: Jewish autonomy and a Jewish population "whose lives don't depend upon the goodwill of others!' "Jews in Israel have self- determination," he continued. "Whatever is wrong is wrong because of us. We have no one The holidays are a time for being with family. When asked her religion, she refused to tell. Asked again, she finally replied, "We're Jewish!" When asked why that was so difficult to say, she replied, "Jewish families are not supposed to have hit- ting." Well, they do, and people here and in Israel have begun to do something about it. "What remains, significant is that spouse abuse has been a known phenomenon in the Jewish communities for cen- turies gone by, and is not new in the modern era, or in America after the women's movement," writes Julie Ringold Spitzer in her Hebrew Union College or- dination thesis, Spousal Abuse in Rabbinic and Con- temporary Judaism. "Sanc- tions do exist against mistreatment of wives. Why then, are there so many rab- bis who are unaware of this? Why are so many people in I Happy holidays from Israel. else to blame." At the Tuesday afternoon session, novelist Oz echoes Avineri's words, but with a stern twist. "Yes, it may be dangerous to live in Israel, but to live in the American Diaspora can be spiritually disastrous," said the author of In the Land of Israel and A Perfect Peace. Oz said that while American Jewry produced outstanding Jewish in- dividuals — writers, artists and scholars — as a communi- ty it could not match the "col-' lective creativity" of Israel, whose elements include the Hebrew language and the kibbutz. In response, sociologist Cohen stood up for achieve- ments by American Jews, in- cluding their political sophistication and influence on Washington's foreign policy. But Oz, like the other Israelis at the symposium, re- mained firm. "Israel is the Jewish stage, while the diaspora is the auditorium," he said. the Jewish community afraid to speak out?" How serious a problem is wife beating in Israel? Ronit Lev-Ari, head of Naamat's Center for the Prevention of Family Violence, did a study of 596 families in her center's caseload and found that in over 30 percent of the families, violence occurs at least once a week and more than 50 percent of the women needed medical treatment as a result of injuries from beatings. Miscarriages due to violence at the hands of their husbands numbered 17.2 per- cent, and others had given birth to brain damaged babies as the result of such treatment. What happens in such cases in Israel? Dr. Jeffrey L. Edelson, associate professor at the University of Min- nesota School of Social Work and director of evaluation and research for the Domestic Abuse Project of Minneapolis, described the situation. He had just returned from Israel where he had given his fourth series of workshops to profes- sional people who deal with the problem there. Who are these men who batter their wives?
