LOCAL NEW S YOU'RE COVERED With Our New T-Shirt! Foundation Grant Allows Agency Service Growth STAFF REPORT Two local Jewish agencies will receive a total of $206,000 in grants from the Detroit-based Skillman Foun- dation. Fifty-four grants totaling $5.2 were awarded by the foundation's trustees at a meeting Nov. 13. The largest Jewish reci- pient is Jewish Family Ser- vice, which was allocated $137,000 to initiate a child abuse prevention program. Jewish Home for Aged received a $69,000 grant to fund an inter-generational program in which seniors would work with children in West Bloomfield schools. The child abuse program will feature intensive in- tervention in families at risk of child abuse, according to foundation President Leonard Smith. Jewish Family Service hopes to serve 30 families with pre-school children dur- ing the three-year demonstra- tion project's first 18 months, he said. Treatment will include in- dividual and family counsel- ing, group therapy, parenting classes and service to homemakers in the home, Smith said. Quoting the JFS grant proposal, Smith ex- plained that the agency saw the need for the program "based upon our current caseload and [information] learned from other Oakland County Agencies." The grants awarded were based on applications by the two agencies, according to foundation Program Officer Kari Schlachtenhaufen. The Skillman Foundation was set up in 1960 by Rose P. Skillman, widow of Robert H. Skillman, vice president and director of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. Mrs. Skillman, who died in 1983, was Jewish. Under the leadership of National Chair- man Peter M. Alter, Otzma is a JWF/Jewish Agency-funded program which provides college-age young people with a year of work and study in Israel. Thirteen local students have already completed or are currently participating in the program. Otzma is geared towards mature, highly motivated young adults, age 18-24, who want to learn first hand about Israel's history, language, culture and lifestyle. Recruitment has begun for the program's third year, and a limited number of scholarships are still available. Jackier is executive director of the American/Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Metropolitan Detroit. She serves on the board of Federation's Women's Division, and co-chairs the Israel Trade Week committee for this year's Israel In- dependence Day celebration. Otzma participants will be involved in all phases of life in Israel, including contact with peers and adoption by Israeli families. Under the auspices of the Jewish Welfare Federation and funded in part by United Jewish Charities and the Jewish Agency for Israel, the one-year fellowship begins in August 1988.
