spasm of violence, produces
fresh recruits to the cause of
religious and political ex-
tremism. And, increasingly,
they are demonstrating that
they have nothing to lose by
fighting back.
The respected Hebrew-lan-
guage daily, Ha'aretz, noted
that "as time passes, the
hostility towards Israel — par-
ticularly among the younger
generation — intensifies;
their hatred for Israeli rule
deepens; their aspiration to
free themselves increases."
"The essence of the prob-
lem, " said the paper, "is a
hopeless attempt to impose a
regime which is considered
foreign, on a society that has
a national conciousness. The
only way to bring an end to
the confrontation is through
a political settlement that
takes into account the
legitimate rights of the in-
habitants of the territories."
But the two-headed Israeli
government of national unity,
politically paralyzed and ap-
parently incapable of produc-
ing a bold initiative that will
turn back the burgeoning
security threat, continues to
rely on its army to apply a
band-aid to its problems.
If it is to avert a repetition
of the trauma and humilia-
tion of Lebanon, Israeli politi-
cians, at some point, are simp-
ly going to have to swallow
hard and strike a political
deal with the Palestinians.
The army will succeed in
dealing with the unrest this
time round. Perhaps next
time, too. Ultimately,
however, a full-scale, uncon-
trollable civil
rebellion by the Palestinians
under occupation appears in-
evitable unless there is a
political solution to what is
essentially a political prob-
lem. ❑

Their IAF Wings
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two promi-
nent former refuseniks who
were Soviet air force heroes
during World War II have
been formally inducted into
the "Israel air force family."
Their combat days may be
over, but Col. Lev Ovsischer
and Maj. Mark Dimshitz pro-
udly received their wings
from Maj. Gen. Avihu Bin-
Nun, the Israel air force com-
mander, at ceremonies at an
air force base Dec. 17.
