young academicians. So we
began the academic lec-
tureships."

The $150,000 lectureships
use the endowment interest
to hire a non-staff young
scientist or engineer. The
$400,000 chairs provide for
the support of a full professor.
Board members also do
much face to face solicita-
tions, presenting to prospec-
tive donors a variety of
available projects. Educa-
tional meetings featuring
speakers from Israel who
work on basic research are
also held.
Funds are also earmarked
for dormitories, laboratories
and scholarships. In 1983 the
group dedicated the Bernard
L. Maas Michigan Dormitory
at the Technion.

Detroit Roots

Although the dream of a
university committed both to
modern scholarship and
Jewish literacy began in 1947
in Palestine, the reality of
Bar-Ran University was born
at a parlor meeting at the
home of Abe and Laura
Nusbaum in Detroit in 1952.
The meeting was led by
Philip Stollman and his
brother and sister-in-law,
Max and Frieda Stollman.
Before Israel's independence,
a group of Zionists in
Palestine proposed a univer-
sity which would be pattern-
ed after Yeshiva College in
New York City — a universi-
ty combining academic ex-
cellence and the core of
Judaica.
Some religious and secular
educators believed the two
types of study should not be
combined. Other sectors
argued that a second univer-
sity in Palestine was
unnecessary.
While the new university
was being debated in Israel,
a small group in the United
