He admits to "glamorizing that time of my life' despite — or maybe because of — the financial hardships and the animosity that existed be- tween his grandmother and his father, who was Irish. "I look back on that time as a nice part of my life," says Manilow. "Isn't that the way it always is about home?" Home is where he parks his talents these days. Despite the accolades and the shrieks from fans, it was, for many years, the groans of critics that got to Manilow. Too white bread they said of the guy with the challah background. Too mushy, too sentimental, too. . . . Too popular? To many, Manilow had only to sing When I Wanted You for them to feel wanted. But the singer didn't feel wanted himself; Manilow finally won over many critics with his album 2 A.M. Paradise Cafe, one of many to go either gold or platinum. It is not so coincidental that Paradise Cafe was also Manilow's cup of tea — an album of jazz, a form of music he fell in love with early on. The conversation continues. Outside, fans are revving up for what will soon be their time with the star. "They're great," Manilow says of his fans. Late the night before, he had sent some staffers out to the line with containers of cof- fee and dougnuts to help his fans ward off the cold. Would Manilow spend a night camping out to see an idol of his? "I can't think anybody I'd do it for," he says. Manilow is the type to go out of his way, however, There are reports that his mother, Edna, has been sickly. Man- ilow it has been reported, rushes to her side every night after his daily tour, flying to her from wherever he may be. Indeed, his mother figures prominently in the book — although not always in such glorious terms. She is de- tailed as an alcoholic and a woman who attempted suicide. The accounts are honestly written. Manilow gave his mother a copy of the galleys before the book was published to gauge her reaction and get her per- mission. "She liked it," he says. "In fact, she helped me remember things." It is helpful to be able to say "My Son, the Composer." Manilow wrote I Made It Through the Rain for his mother as a tribute to the hardships she overcame.
