BACKGROUND: Amy Devone, the
daughter of a cab driver, grew up in
New York. She attended Theodore.
Roosevelt High School in the Bronx and
was senior class president. In the mid-
'60s she was an administrative assistant
for the United Cerebral Palsy of New
York in Brooklyn. After getting
married, she moved to Detroit and
worked as an office assistant at Sinai
Hospital. Later, as a single parent, she
encountered problems with her older
children. Devone then organized the
Detroit chapter of Tough Love, a
national support group that stresses
discipline. On October 22, 1985, Devone
founded KIND, where parents and
children are together in a support
group. The topics vary from drugs,
stepfamilies or whatever is important.
"About 2,000 people have gone through
our program since we started, with
about 75 percent of them teenagers,"
states Devone. In 1986, Mayor Coleman
Young of Detroit declared a KIND
awareness week. "KIND has done more
as an organization than most do in five
years," stated Mayor Young in a written
proclamation. KIND operates mainly on
funds donated by Devone's cousin,
Phillip Cohen of Bear Stearns, a
brokerage firm. "KIND is a unique
organization which builds up the self-
esteem of individuals. We help people
bring love back in their lives," explains
Devone. Devone believes that each day
should be filled with kindness.

ELIZABETH BERKLEY

15, recently finished acting
in the play Eleemosynary at
the Ann Arbor Repertory
Theatre. "The word
eleemosynary means the
charitable giving of alms,"
explains Berkley. The play
is about love and growth
among three generations in
a family. Berkley also
finished Frog, a movie
made for TV, with ELLIOT
GOULD and SHELLY

DUVALL. The movie is
scheduled to air on Jan. 23
on PBS. About traveling
from Farmington Hills to
Hollywood: "It's two dif-
ferent worlds," confides
Berkley.

MACDOWELL REUNION

The first MacDowell reu-
nion was recently held for
the Class of '57. Mac-
Dowell, an elementary
school through the eighth
grade, is located on Outer
Dr. between Wyoming and

Meyers in Detroit.

the reunion after he notic-
ed the cohesiveness of the
MacDowell class at a Mum-
ford reunion. ROBERTA

ROSALYN SNITZ STERN
were also instrumental in
organizing the reunion. Out
of the 105 contacted, 53
graduates attended. They
first toured the school and
had a party at the Potomac
Club in West Bloomfield.
