I, the anti-Semite. The recent
death of Henry Ford II, whose
strong Jewish friendships
negated the venom of his
grandfather, ads significance
to Prof. Lewis' extensive
studies of matters relating to
the Fords. Prof. Lewis informs
me: "I am on a lengthy leave
(from University of Michigan
professorial duties); in fact,
I'll not return to the
classroom until 1990. Mean-
time, I'll be devoting myself
largely to a history of Ford
(1956 to the present), courtesy
of a Ford Motor Co. grant to
the U-M arranged by Henry
Ford II."
Philosophic works with the
WSU Press imprint include
The Jewish Thought of Emil
Fackenheim. It is "a reader,"
edited by Michael L. Morgan
containing selections done in
collaboration with
Fackenheim. The work is an
impressive study of
Fackenheim's philosophy and
his ideals introduced here are
a fascination for Jewish
teachers and students alike..
It is necessary to indicate
here, in view of the
philosopher's fame, that there
is a complementary volume to
the Fackenheim library ap-
pearing at the same time as
the WSU Press book. Summit
Books, a division of Simon
and Schuster, has issued
What Is Judaism? by Emil
Fackenheim. As the sub-title
states, it is "an interpretation

for the present age." Jointly,
the two works are an enrich-
ment of studies of Jewish
spiritual values.
Art works occupy a special-
ly worthy spot at the WSU
Press Pre-Modern Art of Vien-
na: 1948 to 1898 is filled with
fascinating reproductions of
important paintings. Edited
by Leon Botstein and Linda
Weinbraub, it was the
catalogue of an exhibition
which had world attention. It
documents a pivotal moment
in Viennese culture, defining
the modernist revolution that
followed.

Local interest attaches to
another large volume of
notable artistic value. In
Bulletin of the Asia Institute,
there is an important essay
by Wayne State University
Prof. Joseph Gutmann entitl
ed "The Combat Between
Moses and Og in Moslem
Miniature." It was co-
authored by Vera Basch
Moreen. This essay draws
upon a Bible legend and in-
vites continuing extensive
reading of the source in the
Bible.

Art, archeology and history,
the religion and culture of
early Iran, are covered in the
Bulletin of the Asia Institute.
Interconnections with lands
neighboring on Iran, the
Mediterranean and Europe
are interlinked with the Ira-
nian subject matter.

Tpronto (JTA) — Justice
Minister Ramon Hnatyshyn
is negotiating to allow Cana-
dian investigators to take
sworn testimony in the courts
of nine nations that can be
used to prosecute 22 alleged
Nazi war criminals in
Canada, it was learned last
Monday.
The new Criminal Code
allows Canada to try its
citizens for crimes committed
on foreign soil, but only after
sworn testimony is collected
in the countries concerned,
according to William Hobson
of the Justice Ministry. The
testimony, on video tape, may
be presented as evidence in
Canadian courts.
He said the justice minister
is negotiating with the gov-
ernments of Austria, Czecho-
slovakia, Hungary, Israel, the
Netherlands, Poland, Ruman-
ia, the Soviet Union and West
Germany for permission to
take testimony about the
other suspects.
Hobson was recently in
Hungary, where he gathered

information that led to formal
charges against the first of
the suspects, Hungarian-born
Imre Finta. The 76-year-old
restaurateur was arrested in
Hamilton, Ont., on Dec. 9 and
is free on $100,000 (Cana-
dian) bail pending an ap-
pearance in federal court.
Finta was the first suspect
whose name was made public.
He was identified by Sabina
Citron, head of the Holocaust
Remembrance Association,
and several other Holocaust
survivors as a former captain
in the Honveds, a mounted
police unit in Nazicontrolled
Hungary during World War
II, who tortured and mur-
dered Jews and looted their
possessions.
The Justice Ministry has
charged that Finta oversaw
the confinement and trans-
portation of 8,615 Jews to con-
centration camps in Hungary,
Austria and Poland in 1944
and that he is guilty of
manslaughter in the deaths
of an unspecified number of
Jews. His trial is expected to
begin early next year, but no
date has been announced.
