There is an interesting com-
ment on his own reactions. In
the matter of "castigating the
Soviets, fashionable as it has
become," in the numerous
conflicting controversies,
although "it was not the
issue," Miller asserts:
"I should have exulted in
my aloneness and taken
heart from Ibsen's signature
line in An Enemy of the Peo-
ple. — "He is strongest who is
most alone.' But the Jew in
me shied away from private
salvation as something close
to sin. One's truth must add
its push to the evolution of
public justice and mercy,
must transform the spirit of
the city whose brainless roar
went on and on at both ends
of the bridge."
Miller's Timebends is also a
history of the troublesome
time when many were hound-
ed by the political bigotry of
that tragic era.
These are just a few of the
incidents in an interesting
autobiography. The Miller
recollections are commen-
taries on an entire period in
American life. His Timebends
is worth studying, especially
at a time when conservatives
often seek an emulation of a
bitterly-tested past.
Timebends is a compelling
work, worth reading and stu-
dying as a lesson for whatever
political tests may confront
this nation.

Jewish Interest

u

niversities' publish-
ing interests have
given serious atten-
tion to topically Jewish
works. Wayne State Universi-
ty Press has become a leader
in this literary area.
The year's WSU Press
catalogues have become com-
parative to the erstwhile
Jewish publishing houses. Its
products include history,
religion, the arts, and serious
attention to the literature on
the Holocaust.
While the Holocaust was
the chief demand for em-
phasis on Jewish titles, all
Jewish emphases have gain-
ed recognition. The Hebraic
and the Yiddish, linguistical-
ly and culturally, with a devo-
tion to history, have become a
duty for university
publishers. The WSU Press
projects invite serious
acclaim.
Special interest relates to
the reprinting, as a paper-
back, of The Public Image of
Henry Ford by Prof. David
Lewis. This is the widely ac-
claimed story of Henry Ford
