A

performance by the
Israeli dance compa-
ny Inbal will launch
the community-wide celebra-
tion of the 40th anniversary
of Israel's independence. The
concert will take place April
17 at the Music Hall.
Other events to take place
include an Israel At 40 con-
cert starring Mike Burstyn
and an Israeli trade fair at
Tel-12 Mall featuring an
assortment of Israeli-made
products.
Also in April, 7th and 8th
grade students will par-
ticipate in a Quiz Bowl to test
their knowledge of Israeli
history and landmarks. Yom
Hazikaron will be observed
on April 19.
The celebration will be cap-
ped by "Festival 88" on May
1 at the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center. Beginn-
ing at 10 a.m., the festival
will feature a cultural arts
fair, ethnic foods, interna-
tional entertainment, art
displays and children's ac-
tivities. Later in the day, the
Jewish Welfare Federation
will sponsor a walk for Israel.
The 40th anniversary com-'
mittee is co-chaired by
Marlene Borman. Included
on the committee are Alex
Blumenberg, Gilbert Bor-
man, Rosalie Dean, Franklin
J. Ellias, Michael S. Feldman,
Shula Fleischer, Donald Fox,
Fred Goldenberg, Betsy
Snider Heuer, Shelly Jackier,
Bernard S. Kent, Linda Lee,
Annette Meskin, Robert H.
Naftaly, Norman Naimark,
Dale G. Rands, Robert A.
Shapiro, Isadore Shrodeck,
Jessie Stern and Alan Yost.

Dr. Maurice S. Opperer is
chairing the walk for Israel.
Marlene Borman told The
Jewish News that the com-
mittee was hoping for and
getting community-wide par-
ticipation. The 40th anniver-
sary celebration is proposed
as a year-long event, with
various groups sponsoring
regular acivities as part of
Israel's 40th birthday.
"We will highlight a two-
week period," Mrs. Borman
said, from April 20 to May 5.
"but we want everyone to use
the Israel 40th logo with their
mailings. Every Jewish per-
son in town will be part of the
wonderful things Israel has
done in 40 years." Several
other events throughout the
year, including Cong. Shaarey
Zedek's annual Weisberg con-
cert, will be linked to the
anniversary.
"We can always find things
to criticize, but we want to
talk about the positive things
and develop a feeling of cial
(community). We want the en-
tire community, not just the
Jewish community, to see the
wonderful things Israel has
done," Mrs. Borman said.
The Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion is serving as a catalyst to
bring community organiza-
tions together. Several
groups, she said, are working
on joint projects for the an-
niversary. In addition,
Federation is sponsoring a
non-solicitation mission to
Israel in April, led by Robert
Naftaly, in an effort to boost
the percentage of local Jews
who have visited Israel at
least once.
"And for those who can't
go," she said, "we are trying
to bring a touch of Israel
here."
