Shaarey Zedek is in- terested in forming new chavurot for its members. A chavurah is an opportunity for small groups of Jewish families and singles of all ages who share common in- terests to meet together on a regular basis for celebration, socializing, study and friendship. Persons who are presently involved in a chavurah or wish to join one are invited to a kickoff event on Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. at the synagogue. For information, contact Rabbi William Gershon, 357-5544. Yeshiva Army Exemptions Criticized Tel Aviv (TPA) — Public at- tention was focussed last week on the sizable number of yeshiva students exempted from military service. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres agreed it is unfair and does not serve the national interest. Shamir said that "the wholesale exemption of yeshiva students from service is splitting the nation in two." Peres proposed that exemp- tions should be reduced to the number necessary to main- tain the religious schools, not make them a haven for draft dodgers. He told the Knesset's For- eign Affairs and Security Committee that "the criteria for exemptions have appar- ently changed since 1977, and we ought to examine the reasons why." Israeli law requires that all able-bodied citizens serve in the armed forces when they reach the age of 18. Men are required to serve for three years and women for two years. But yeshiva students are excused as long as they pursue their religious studies.
