He had hoped that 200,000 Jews would be standing on the Ellipse in front of the White House on Dec. 7, when Gorbachev ar- rived. "President Reagan would take Gorbachev by the arm over to the White House window and say, 'Look. How can we ignore 200,000 peo- ple?" Wiesel's speech last week was delivered on the one-year anniversary of the Nobel Prize ceremony honoring him in Oslo, Norway. But as soon as he could break away from the Oslo festivities he return- ed to his hotel room and began telephoning Jewish refuseniks in Moscow. "I wanted them to know that when a Jew rejoices it is through them. Never have I felt more part of a communi- ty, but then I feel it every day. Only God is alone," he told his audience. "We are made to be together . . . When we are together our strength is com- mensurate." To emphasize his point, Wiesel pointed to the times in history when Jews chose "solitary solutions" and fail- ed. The Maranos of Spain, he says, "paid with their lives" for remaining Jews in secret and virtually disappeared. "The Jews of the Soviet Union were Maranos for decades, but they have come back together. They gather by the thousands on Simhat Torah. AJCampaign Opens With $17 Million Total Elie Wiesel spurred atten- dance to soar at last week's formal opening of the 1988 Allied Jewish Campaign. More than 800 Detroiters at- tended the event at Cong. Shaarey Zedek to hear the Nobel Laureate and the an- nouncement that the Cam- paign has achieved $17 million in pledges toward its $26 million goal. Campaign co-chairmen Jane Sherman and David Hermelin announced that $17.7 million had been pledged, representing an in- crease of $1.6 million over the opening total last year. The amount is based on pledges from 3,510 major givers. Some 13,000 Detroiters will be contacted in the remaining months of the Campaign. Dr. Conrad Giles, Jewish Welfare Federation president, spoke to the crowd about the Dec. 6 Soviet Jewry demonstration in Washing- ton, praising Detroiters for "seizing the opportunity" in an effort to make a difference for fellow Jews. "When we stand in judge- ment in history we can say that on that one beautiful day we stood together," Dr. Giles said. The audience saw a slide presentation covering the Washington rally, and also heard a short musical presen- tation by Soviet emigres Nicolai and Ludmilla Lemberg. Earlier in the day, Wiesel met with several groups of Detroiters. He spent 45 minutes with the board members of CHAIM (Chil- dren of Holocaust Survivors Association in Michigan) and was also presented a copy of the new high school Holo- caust curriculum prepared by the Center for the Study of the Child.
