FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1987

ime is just around the
corner . . . 12 mid-
night, Dec. 31, that is
. . . and folks are priming
themselves to give the "old
1987 geezer" (a phenonemon
who can grow a full-length
beard at one-year-old) a big
kick in the butt.
He came in as a baby with
high expectations for
everyone and goes out a local
loser to many . . . Sports fans
won't forgive him for the
Dantley-Johnson head conker
that lost their National
Basketball Association cham-
pionship semi-final to the
Boston Celtics . . . or the sud-
den heavy arms that couldn't
swing bats in the Detroit
Tiger playoff loss to the Min-
nesota Twins . . . airplane
crashes, stock market crash,
etc. etc.
To some he was a winner
. . . and they're sorry to see
him leave the scene.
But 1988 has some big pro-
mises in store . . . and that's
what folks will be raising
their glasses to toast at. 12
midnight on Dec. 31.
Here are some of the things
being offered for the one time
of year when almost
everybody is enjoying a
festive mood . . . in the col-
umn's annual alphabetically-
arranged mini listing . . .
with plenty of food, all kinds,
loads of dancing, much merri-
ment, good and bad music
and comedians telling old
jokes like, "My wife has a
slight impediment in her
speech. Every once in a while
she stops to breathe." .. .
