ner. When I got in the outside
world, everything seemed a
little duller than it was at my
house."
But sometimes dull could
prove to be a welcome respite.
The actor years ago noted
that "I had a major emotional
thing to overcome wanting to
be accepted for myself instead
of as a son of Carl Reiner. I
went through a painful
schedule."
Indeed, some of that pain
has been ameliorated over the
years by a friendship with
Norman Lear, creator of All
in the Family and Reiner's
mentor.
Lear is executive producer
of The Princess Bride, which
stars Mandy Patinkin,
Christopher Guest, Chris
Sarandon, Billy Crystal and
Peter Falk, who portrays the
grandfather telling the tale of
the princess bride to his
grandson.
God bless Norman Lear,
Reiner has said. "Norman
has been very supportive over
the years. He recognized my
talent a lot sooner than my
own father did."
When Carl and Rob worked
together on the short-lived
Broadway comedy The Roast
— papa as director; son as ac-
tor — some years back, the ex-
perience, said Carl, was
similar to a Thvye experience.
On the one hand, it was
nice to work with his son; on
the other hand .. .
It was "a wonderful and
terrible experience at the
same time. I try to treat all
my 'children,' " referring to
actors, "the same. But it's
very much still a father-son
relationship," said the father
figure.
"I think it was harder for
Rob. If he didn't like
something, he didn't want to
undercut his own father. He
had to control himself, push
down his emotions. After all,
he had to be a good boy for his
father."
Any tension that may have
existed before seems to have
dissipated. Reiner recently
told a reporter that his father
has been the most influential
factor in his career.

"I'm more comfortable say-
ing that now," Reiner said.
"He was always able to make
the comedy come out of
something real and organic."
Real and organic — like
father, like son: Both provide
such qualitative virtues to
their projects, whether the
father's contributions to
television (Your Show of

Shows, The Dick Van Dyke
Show) or the son's to film.

Fairy tales do come true.
Just ask Rob Reiner.
