At Ithaca College, he played the title role in Tar- tuffe and is featured in a forthcoming film, Wolfpack. Unger has directed on Long Island, N.Y., and Theater Row in New York City and is assisting the producers in the forthcoming Broadway musical, Arthur. He also is the producer and artistic director of the Hooterhyter Children's Theater. Unger started doing theater in high school. "It got into my blood in a way that it has to be if you're going to make it in this business . . . I can't live without it," he said. Nackman got into theater to overcome shyness. "I was ter- ribly, terribly, terribly shy. Silent. I was silent through junior high school. I had these fantasies of being famous, of fj Michael Unger being a singer, of being on stage, of having a talk show, anything like that — adula- tion, applause. Any kind of positive feedback. Any kind of contact with people where I really didn't have to be afraid that they're really going to be reacting to me." But he also had an ulterior motive — he wanted to meet girls. Going into theater "was the only way I could conceive of ever being in the same room with a girl:' Was he successful? He nodded, yes, smiling. After Biloxi finishes its Detroit run, Nackman plans to return to New York to start hitting the pavement again. Unger had a message to call his agent. Is there a dream part that either Nackman or Unger would like to play? For Unger, he's already found it. "This is really a dream come true for me. It speaks so much to what I went through personally and what I believe in per- sonally and what I've been taught to sustain in the face of adversity." Until he got the part of Jerome about a month ago, Nackman said he felt the same way. And do they have a favorite type of production, such as drama, comedy or musical? For Nackman, it's whatever he's in at the moment, but added he'd like to do a musical since, he said, he had not appeared in one for a long time. Yet, while appearing a musical, he'd "die for something serious." Unger said he didn't have a preference. "I really don't care, as long as I can keep stretching myself (as an ac- tor). To remain an exciting ac- tor and a spontaneous actor you cannot settle into anything." ❑
