In this devel- oping country, now experienc- ing an economic boom, many substantial joint projects benefit from Israeli know-how and technology. Buddhist Thailand has al- ways been well disposed towards Israel and a Thai- Israel Friendship Association attracts attendances of up to 500 at its meetings. And the formal relationship between the two governments is good even though Thailand has not established an Embassy in Israel. Informal relations are even better. The venerated royal family and individual ministers maintain a warm in- terest in Israel, not unmind- ful of the advantages of cooperation. Yet Thailand is less than friendly to the Jewish state in the international arena and invariably votes against Israel at the United Nations. The government sees this as the price for remaining on good terms with Moslem countries and, in particular, with its neighbor, Malaysia. Malaysia is fanatically Moslem. As recently as last February, the National Moslem Religious Council im- posed whipping as the penal- ty for religious offenses like drinking and illicit sex. And it will be recalled that last year a visit by the New York Symphony was cancelled be- cause the Malaysians objec- ted to the inclusion of a Hebrew item in the program. Why 52 million Thais should be so nervous about the 16 million Malaysians is not clear, but in general the Thai government tends to be timorous and reluctant to give offense. Some of its ap- prehension arises out of the problem of its own Moslem population in the south which has links with Malaysian co- religionists.
