Israel and the Israeli Tennis
Centers, but I think he's a
real supporter and a friend of
the Jews." Brode added that
Connors had not yet received
a response from the Soviets.
Gilbert, who won $8940,
made a $10,000 donation to
the Centers.
Brode planned to begin ask-
ing his group for donations
during the week after the
tourney, as they toured Israel.
It appeared that his timing
was bad when, on October 19,
the stock market crashed.
But his fears were laid to rest
when the first person he en-
countered the following mor-
ning offered a $25,000 dona-
tion. "It didn't bother fund-
raising one bit, the market
crash," reported Brode. "We
collected monies beyond our
wildest dreams, we far ex-
ceeded our goals — we doubl-
ed our goals."
Only a handful of
Americans returned to the
United States following the
market crash. Among those
who stayed was Dick Savitt,
a New York stockbroker, who
is also the only Jew to ever
win the Wimbledon singles
title.
Another highlight of the
eventful trip was a bar mitz-
vah ceremony held at the
Western Wall for 11 members
of the American group who
had never been bar mitzvah-
ed. They included three
Detroiters: Joe and Milton
Dresner, and Ted Jacobson, as
well as Brad Gilbert's father,
Barry. Brode, who attended
the 7:00 a.m. ceremony,
summed up the trip this way,
"I feel we accomplished not
only seeing the Centers, but
we made some good Jews out
of a few people." ❑

A new outdoor sports and
recreation center, the largest
in northern Jerusalem, was
dedicated November 15 on
the Mount Scopus campus of
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem.
Called the Astrid and
Henry Montor Outdoor
Sports and Recreation Center,
the new facility encompasses
11 tennis courts, three
basketball courts, one multi-
purpose (basketball, volley-
ball, team handball or tennis)
court and three one-wall
handball courts.
The new sports center is
directed by Steve Willinger,
former head coach and direc-
tor of tennis operations at
Yale University.
