The students slept in the bus Saturday night, participated in the five-and-a-half hour long march and rally, and drove back Sunday night. "By being a part of it, being right there, I will be able to convey the feelings of the movement a lot better. I want to make a statement by going, in addition to having an educational experience," said freshman Brian Portney. One of the students who en- dured the bus trip, Shari Perlstein, felt strongly that the demonstration was successful. "I think it's important the way we as American Jews made a statement to Gor- bachev that we care, and that the rights of Jews in the Soviet Union are important to us," she said. Josh Katz compared the ral- ly with the annual parade held in New York every year to protest the plight of Soviet Jewry. ". U a unique opportunity for students to speak out • • • "It was such an experience. Thousands of Jews grouping together, singing songs, and marching thru streets of the city. These rallies are one of the few times of the year when Jews are recognized so much," he said. Art school student Pamela Haber stressed that the march offered a unique oppor- tunity for students to speak out on the issue. "Even if nothing comes out of the rally, I did the best that I could and went and spoke out for these people who couldn't. I want to do everything I can to help," she said. "It's so long — 12 hours on a bus each way — but it's so worth it." Jerry Wish, a senior and co- chairman of Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, said, "I don't think the issue is as big as it should be. Issues such as apartheid get much more press. The Soviet Jewry issue, as a fact, is not accompanied by violence and that's a big factor. You don't have the hor- ror stories of people being killed. As a result, when peo- ple do hear about Soviet Jewry, they think it is a religious issue. The group rallied Monday on the campus diag. At that rally, students who par- ticipated in the "Freedom Sunday" celebration re- counted their experiences in Washington. Q w m w • BANQUET TABLES 5', 6', 8' BEGINNING AT $49.96. ASST.
