sky, Yuli Edelshtein, Yosef
Mendelevich, Lev and Inna
Elbert, Ida Nudel, and
Vladimir and Maria Slepak.
The Slepaks provided the
session's most emotional
moments after they arrived
from Milwaukee two hours in-
to the hearing. Rather than
taking their seats at the
witness stand, Maria Slepak
went over to Sharansky and
gave him a great big hug,
bringing tears to the eyes of
many of the commission
members.
The refuseniks were divided
into three panels to deal with
Jewish culture, state secrets
and summit prospects.
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.),
co-chairman of the commis-
sion, in his opening remarks,
said that "the more than
6,000 (Soviet Jews) who have
left (in 1987) is a mere pit-
tance compared to those who
wait to leave," a number
estimated by former refuse-
nik Lev Elbert in the tens of
thousands.

Argentina Jews
Report Trouble

New York — Jacobo
Kovadloff, director of South
American affairs and Spanish
media of the American
Jewish Committee, recently
reported that the Jewish com-
munity of Argentina "once
again is experiencing a period
of anxiety and fear in the face
of a growing anti-Semitic
campaign?'
"Anti-Semitic literature is
on the increase, and its fascist
and racist diatribes are alar-
ming," Kovadloff added. He
noted that during the last
election campaign, Jewish
candidates such as the
Peronist Nestor PeH, elected
as governor of the Province of
Chubot, and even non Jews
such as Juan Manuel Casella,
Radical Party candidate as
governor of the Province of
Buenos Aires, were attacked
as "Jews."
