2.7 Million Jews
In Soviet Union

Jerusalem (JTA) — A For-
eign Ministry official last
week estimated there are 2.7
million Jews living in the
Soviet Union, a figure at
variance with the 1.5 million
claimed by Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres recently.
The report, submitted to
the Cabinet by ministry staf-
fer David Bartov, also ap-
peared to challenge Peres'
argument that the diminish-
ing number of Jews in the
USSR made it urgent for
Israel to try to renew
diplomatic ties with Moscow.
According to Bartov, most
Jews who have left the Soviet
Union emigrated during the
past 20 . years, when there
were no diplomatic relations
with Israel> Of the 300,000
Soviet Jewish emigres since
1958, 170,000 came .to Israel,
most of them after the 1967
Six Day War when the Rus-
sians broke diplomatic rela-
tions, he said.

Key System
to Life Found

Rehovot — In living cells,
systems are so intricately in-
terconnected that rarely is it
possible to pinpoint just one
and claim: without this, there
would be no life.
But, according to Prof. Zip-
pora Gromet-Elhanan,
recently appointed head of
the biochemistry department
at the Weizmann Institute of
Science, the system responsi-
ble for producing and break-
ing down the energy-rich
biochemical known as ATP
(adenosine triphosphate)is an
exception. If it goes awry for
any reason, thereby offsetting
the delicate balance between
ATP synthesis and hydrolysis,
all living plant and animal
cell functions cease.

Chinese Student
Picks Israeli U.

Rehovot — A winning com-
bination of "nice, friendly,
and smart" tipped the scales
in favor of Israel, and the
Weizmann Institute's
Feinberg Graduate School,
over universities in the USA
for graduate student Suning
Tang from the Chinese Peo-
ple's Republic.
Tang hopes that his deci-
sion to study in Israel will be
a first in "promoting
understanding and friendship
between the two peoples
through joint study pro-
grams."
