TEN YEARS AGO
The Knesset endorsed a
26-point Middle East peace plan
with Egypt.
An anti-black, anti-Semitic
bookstore opened on Vernor in
Detroit. The opening was met with
40 YEARS AGO
an eviction notice and a firebombing
attempt. An estimated 200 people
picketed the store.
Chaim Weizmann was hailed as
the first president of the new Jewish
state of Israel. Ernst Lubitsch, 55,
director of To Be Or Not To Be, after
whom the "Lubitsch touch" was
named, died of a heart attack in his
Hollywood home.
An SOS (Supplies for Overseas
Survivors) week-long drive created
by the Detroit Jewish community
sought canned goods and warm
clothes for the displaced persons in
Europe.
20 YEARS AGO
Israel became a victim of
terrorist attacks perpetrated upon
her by El Fatah. The group
left signed pamphlets in Hebrew
and Arabic at the scene of
the explosion at a reservoir
at Almager.
A groundbreaking ceremony
was held for Hillel Day School.

preschoolers at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"Chanukah Inside Out" is the theme of
a special Chanukah celebration slated from
noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Tamarack
Adventure Center. At 2 p.m. Gemini will
appear in concert. Admission is gained by
bringing one can of food per person. Food
will be donated to the Oakland County Food
Bank. Co-sponsors of the celebration are:

Adventure Center and Jewish Experiences
for Families.
Making Cookies Is A Family Affair

DREIDEL-MENORAH
COOKIES
Have the children gather the
ingredients: 1 tbsp. orange juice, 2
cups flour, 1/2 cup oil, 2 eggs, 1 cup
sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp.
cinnamon, 2 tsp. baking powder and
1 /4 tsp. salt.
Let Dad combine all the
ingredients in a bowl and mix
thoroughly in the mixer. Let dough
stand in refrigerator for 1/2 hour.
Have Mom roll out the dough
on a floured surface. Let each of
the kids use plastic Chanukah
cookie cutters to cut out the
cookies. (Variation: Dip cookies in
'colored sugar, sprinkles or
cinnamon sugar before baking.)
Have Mom or Dad bake the
cookies at 400 degrees for ten
minutes.
POTATO LAT K ES
Let the children gather the
ingredients: 5 Idaho potatoes, 2
eggs, 1 large onion, 1 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2
tsp. pepper, 1/2 cup matzah meal.
With Mom operating the food
processor, put peeled potatoes,
onion, 2 eggs on grater speed.
When grated shut machine off
immediately. Add salt, pepper,
matzah meal to mixture.
Let Dad heat the oil in the
frying pan to cover 1/4 inch of the
pan. While the oil sizzles, Mom can
drop the potato mixture in by
tablespoons to desired size.
Fry till brown on both sides.
Place on paper towel. Serve with
applesauce or sour cream. Yield:
nine large latkes.
