BERG AND URBACH HEBREW MEMORIAL CHAPEL FINE MONUMENTS SINCE 1910 Detroiter Bertha Stay Served As Israeli Nurse Bertha Sanders Stay, who became a halutza, pioneering as a registered nurse, had a lifelong career in kibbutzim social services and Israel medical activities since her settlement in Deganya Bet in 1933. She died Dec. 4, just two days short of her 78th birthday. Her mother, Sarah Sanders Kameroff, a leader in Detroit Labor Zionist ranks who was one of the organizers of the original Pioneer Women group in Detroit, joined her later. She died in 1966. Mrs. Stay's co-workers in the early years of the building of the Jewish state were Israel's presidents and prime ministers, including Moshe Dayan, Golda Meir and the early leaders in the Labor Zionist ranks. There were many important assignments to her credit, in the kibbutz life as well as in social and medical services. Judge Benjamin Burdick Had Jewish Roles Judge Benjamin Burdick, whose long judicial career ended last Saturday with his death at age 84, had a notable career politically and in the Jewish community. He was among the promi- nent in the Michigan Republican Party ranks who included Judge Charles C. Simons, Judge Harry V. Keidan and Judge William Friedman and more recently Max Fisher and Judge Charles Rubiner. In addition to activities in the Zionist Organization of America Detroit District and the Jewish National Fund, which he served as an active board member for more than 30 years, he was congrega- tionally devoted, with a regularity in Cong. Shaarey Zedek and its numerous functions. Born in Lawrence, Mass., Judge Burdick came to Detroit at age 10. He was the first graduate of the Wayne State University Law School in 1928, was elected in 1959 to the Wayne State Board of Governors and won judicial appointment by former Gov. George Romney in 1963. Judge Burdick left the Wayne County Circuit Court bench in 1979. A member of Cong. Profes- sionally, Judge Burdick was a member of the American, Federal and Detroit bar associations. Judge Burdick leaves his wife, Mary; a son, James; a daughter, Mrs. David (An- drea) Page; two brothers, Judge Irwin and Herbert; a sister, Mrs. Israel (Shirley) Greenberg; and three grandchildren. Simon Halkin Jerusalem — Prof. Simon L. Halkin, professor emeritus of Hebrew literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a leading Israeli writer, educator and translator, died Nov. 19 at age 88. Born in Russia, Prof. Halkin came to the U.S. as a youth and was educated at Columbia University and at universities in New York and Chicago. He was the former head of the Hebrew depart- ment at Hebrew Union Col- lege for Teachers in New York from 1924 to 1932. He went to Israel for a few years and returned to the U.S. to teach Hebrew literature at the Col- lege of Jewish Studies in Chicago.
