their children tell them to
keep two sets of dishes.
"The same kid who was
swerving in a cult could find
beautiful spirituality in
Judaism, and it wasn't a cult
for our grandparents in
Europe," Rabbi Spivak added.
"One day we'll reach the
point where anyone who
keeps religion will be con-
sidered crazy"
The rabbi recalled a com-
ment made by Adolf
Eichmann at the time he was
told that the Nazi's would not
succeed in wiping out world-
Jewry. "It doesn't matter,"
Eichmann said. "Once I cut
off the cultural base of Euro-
pean Jewry, the assimilated
Jews of America will not sur-
vive."
In a film featuring discus-
sion , with Jews for Jesus
ministers, one man speaks of
the 50,000 Russian-Jewish
immigrants living in
Brighton Beach, N.Y. "We
have meetings for them every
Friday night. Sometimes we
get crowds of 700 people. We
show films [in Russian].
They're very hungry for
culture in their own
language, and we're reaching
out to them. We've created a
Jewish-Christian congrega-
tion where Jewish people can
worship comfortably
alongside gentiles on Friday
nights and also Sunday mor-
nings. They can even wear a
kippah if they like?'
"Today," Rabbi Spivak said,
"American Jewry has united
itself behind the march in
_ Washington. I pray and hope
that American Jewry doesn't
use this to say, 'Well, we've
fulfilled our obligation? There
is no help, and there are no
demonstrations .for the Jews
of Brighton Beach as the mis-
sionaries spend hundreds of
thousands of dollars to recruit
them?'
