WHAT'S IM rifiME? EVERYTHING! IF YOU'RE IMTERESTED In DIAMONDS, which has seen some 65,000 workers laid off and $800 million in operating losses. Zoran weathered the crisis by entering a new field (single chip DSP's) whose nation- wide sales have been increas- ing some 80 percent annual- ly. Monolithic Memories is weathering the crisis by cut- ting costs and concentrating heavily on new product development. While the main cause for the present slump is the drop in computer sales after the big boom of the ear- ly 1980's, the American in- dustry is also being hurt by J apanese competition. Ordinary competition and quick changing technologies are not the only perils of this volatile industry in which Israelis are taking an increas- ingly important part. Out- right theft and copying of sophisticated semiconductor technology are other common hazards. In 1981, for example, $3.5 million worth of chips were stolen from Monolithic Memories. The chips were recovered several months later in nearby Lake Tahoe. Yet, while this was an ordinary theft-for-resale, the more subtle theft of designs and know-how poses a no less serious problem. A rival com- pany or country can save mil- lions in development costs and years of work simply by copying someone else's designs. While facing such "routine" problems, Silicon Valley com- panies adopt some free-wheel- ing, competitive ways. These have included mutual "raids" for qualified personnel; to keep good men, incentives range from expensive gifts to big bonuses. The frenetic pace has led to unsettled lives, and in Santa Clara County, one of the fastest growing in the U.S., divorces now outnumber marriages. Into this effervescent en- vironment, Israeli brains and managerial skills have slowly carved themselves a niche. "It's definitely a brain drain for Israel," says Yaacov D ayan. But in the long run, con- sidering the fact that most of the Israelis in key Silicon Valley positions eventually create beneficial commercial ties with Israel, Levy Gerz- berg may be right. "I'm bringing more benefit to Israel from here," Gerzberg says. Victor Perry is a writer in Israel.
