According to Lt. Col. Raanan Gissin, former depu- ty spokesman of the Israel Defense Force and the senior liaison officer with the foreign press in Israel from 1982 to 1986, Syria wanted to demonstrate with this ter- rorist attack that it is "the leading force in the armed struggle against Israel." Syria, Gissin explained, came out as a "total loser" from last month's Arab sum- mit meeting in Amman, Jor- dan. Not only did King Hus- sein of Jordan received "a green light" by the end of the summit to continue with the efforts to reach a settlement with Israel, but Syria also found itself with only Libya opposing the resumption of diplomatic relations with Egypt, Gissin noted. "Syria found herself after the summit almost isolated in the Arab world. In addition to the other factors, Syrian isolation in the Arab world was magnified by its support of Iran in the Iran-Iraq war. Syria needed something to demonstrate a semblance of leadership in the Arab world. This is why President Hafez Assad (of Syria) allowed the terrorists of Ahmed Jabril, who heads the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which is headquartered in Syria, to launch the attack against Israel," Gissin said. In Gissin's view, the ter- rorist suicide mission proves that Israel cannot seal its border with Lebanon hermet- ically. He contended, however, that the perpetrator, who sailed over the electrified fences of the Lebanon-Israel border in a hang-glider powered by a small bicycle motor, succeeded in his mis- sion "by a fluke," because he was actually spotted by the IDF radar. Only a failure of the guards to heed the warn- ing that was issued enabled the terrorist to kill six soldiers and wound seven others. Gissin disclosed that in the last six months, more than 150 terrorists have been killed in the Israeli-controlled security zone in southern Lebanon and on the Israel- Lebanon border by the IDF and the South Lebanon Army, which is backed by Israel. In addition, various terrorist organizations in Lebanon have attempted 35 attacks on IDF and SLA targets in southern Lebanon in the last 12 months, Gissin said. Nakash Deported To France Tel Aviv (JTA) — William Nakash, an Algerian-born Jew, was deported to France last week after losing a two- year battle against extradi- tion that raised the passions of nationalist elements in Israel and pitted the rab- binical authorities against the secular courts. Nakash, under heavy guard, Was taken handcuffed from prison to the ramp of an El Al plane at Ben Gurion Airport, where he was handed over to two French police officers sent to escort him to France. He will stand trial there for the Feb. 22, 1983 murder of Abdelali Hakkar, an Algerian Arab in Besancon, a city in southern France near the Swiss border. Nakash, 26, who fled to Israel nearly four years ago to escape an arrest warrant, was tried in absentia for the crime, convicted and sen- tenced to life imprisonment. The French authorities agreed recently to give him a second trial. W. Germany Buys Israeli Ammo Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel has signed an agreement with West Germany to supply its army, the Bundeswehr, with $190 million worth of ar- tillery ammunition, Haaretz reported from Bonn last week. In Bonn, the Defense Min- istry simultaneously confirm- ed that the deal was con- cluded. It was signed for West Germany by Heinz Glaser, president of the Koblenz- based Federal Office for Military Procurement, and for Israel by Michael Shor, general manager of Israel Military. Industries. According to the newspaper report, Israel Military In- dustries will supply the West Germans with the com- ponents of the ammunition.
