Bonn (JTA) — The state pro-
secutor in East Berlin has ap-
pealed against the relatively
light sentences given by a
district court there last Mon-
day to four neo-Nazi thugs
convicted of acts of violence.
The prosecutor contended
that the one- to two-year
prison terms were not consis-
tent with the nature of their
offenses. The four, members of
a "skinhead" group, broke in-
to the Zion Church in East
Berlin on Oct. 17, shouting
"Jewish pigs" and "send the
Jews to the gas chambers."
They injured several con-
gregants, some seriously, and
damaged property.
The Zion Church, a Protes-
tant denomination, is friend-
ly to East Berlin's tiny Jewish
community with which it
maintains a running
dialogue. The prosecution had
demanded sentences of up to
four years.
The trial was unusual in-
asmuch as it was the first
public admission by the East
German authorities that neo-
Nazis are active in the Com-
munist Democratic Republic
of Germany. They still main-
tain, in conversations with
Western reporters, that the
right-wing extremists were
influenced by "subversive
elements" in West Germany.
The "skinheads," youthful
roughnecks who wear Nazi-
like uniforms, are a

its demise.
\The fifth andlast Abourezk
argument is that Israel is not
a benefit but a burden to the
United States.
The fact is the Soviets are
an expansionary power, con-
stantly seeking influence
anywhere they can at the ex-
pense of the United States.
Radical Arab nations like
Syria and Algeria have not
been forced into becoming
allies of the Soviets because of
Israel but because of their
own proclivities.
Bookbinder is at his best in
detailing the numerous
strategic advantages Israel
provides to the United States.
This book, then is instruc-
tive not because it lays a foun-
dation for a peaceful resolu-
tion of the Arab-Israeli con-
flict, but precisely because it
demonstrated how intrac-
trable the conflict is, how dif-
ferent the perceptions are,
how wide is the gulf that
must be overcome.

In addition, as Bookbinder
mentions, ultimately U.S.
support for Israel exists not
because three percent of the
American people, whose
political actions committees
provide one percent of the
campaign funds in the United
States somehow coerce
America's politicians to act
contrary to what they believe
to be in America's best in-
terests, but because the
American people identify
with a country which shares
their passion for democracy
and respect for human digni-
ty, the commonality of the
Judeao-Christian heritage,
and Israel's staunchly pro-
American posture.
But it is my experience that
this support is hardly as blind
and unquestioned as Abour-
ezk would have us believe.
Abourezk uses U.S. support of
the Lavi fighter plane to
underscore his case, ironic in
that U.S. pressure on Israel to
stop the plane recently led to
phenomenon that has sur-
faced recently in Western
countries, including the
United States. Most of them
are aggressively anti-Semitic.
So far, the Jewish communi-
ty in East Berlin has not been
disturbed, but it is apprehen-
sive. It sent observers to the
trial of the four thugs.
Japan Arrests
Lod Airport
Terrorist
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
said last weeky that Israel
was not contemplating ask-
ing Japan for the extradition
of Osamu Maruoka, reported-
ly the No. 2 man in the
Japanese Red Army who
helped plot the massacre at
Lod Airport in 1972.
Japanese police arrested
the 37-year-old Maruoka as
he entered Japan from Hong
Kong. Twenty-seven people
were killed in the bloodbath
at the Israeli airport, now
named Ben-Gurion Interna-
tional Airport.
Japanese authorities, who
waited several days before
announcing Maruoka's appre-
hension, did not explain how
they had tracked and cap-
tured the terrorist leader.
They said, however, that
when caught he had about
$37,000 on him.
