First, Abourezk denies the
very legitimacy of the Jewish
state and denegrates its
validity. Despite repeated ef-
forts by Bookbinder, Abour-
ezk refuses to admit that
Israel has a "right" to exist,
merely stating Israel's ex-
istence is a matter of "fact."
He ignores totally, without so
much as a sentence, the
historical connection of the
Jewish people with Israel.
Bookbinder tellingly
reminds Abourezk of the
Jewish connection to the Pro-
mised Land; of Britain's
Balfour Declaration of 1917
promising a "national home
for the Jewish people" in the
Palestine it then controlled; of
the 1947 UN partion plan ac-
cepted by the Jewish leader-
ship in Palestine, and of the
utter absence of any history of
a Palestine state.
Second, having tried to de-
legitimize Israel, the former
senator then casts Israel as
an international outlaw na-
tion, guilty of "chicanery,"
"crimes," "official racism"
against Arabs, and "ter-
rorism" to perpetuate 'and ex-
pand its domain.
Here again, Bookbinder's
rebuttal is firm, sound and
moving. He points to the full
citizenship enjoyed by Israeli
Arabs, Israel's efforts to reset-
tle black Ethiopian Jews and
to assist the economic
development of black Africa,
and its punishment of those,
including the Jewish
underground on the West
Bank, who violate the human
rights of Palestinians.
Third, Abourezk charges
that the American media is
an accomplice in the "crimes"
allegedly perpetuated against
the Palestinians.
Bookbinder accurately
details the anti-Israel news
coverage of the Lebanon war
to counter Abourezk's
charges of one-sided
treatment.
Fourth, Abourezk contends
that the sole reason for
American support of Israel is
the "power of money flowing
from the Israel lobby to
American politicians?'
The fact is American Jews
do have influence on
America's Middle East policy
disproportionate to their size
in the population, just as
black Americans have on civil
rights issues which directly
affect them or on South
African policy which impacts
on their fellow blacks or as
the business community has
on corporate tax and regula-
tory matters; or organized
labor on matters affecting
worker wages, benefits and
workplace safety.
