murder trial. However, the
character is written as almost
totally obtuse and incompe-
tent. She does very dumb
things, like not checking out
key evidence until the trial is
almost over.
Dennis Quaid is brash and
charming as the juror who
helps Cher (illegally) doing
the kind of investigation a de-
cent lawyer would do. But, if
you ignore this aspect of
Suspect, you can enjoy it as a
good, action melodrama.
Three Men and a Baby
(rated: PG) is already a huge
hit, understandably. It's a
lightweight farce with lots of
laughs, sentiment, and some
action thrown in for good
measure. What's more, it's got
the most appealing baby ever
seen on the screen. (Actually,
two babies, twins, play the
single part because shooting
time with an infant is se-
verely limited by law.)
On top of that, the "three
men" of the title are played by
three of Hollywood's reigning
sex symbols: Tom Selleck,
Danson, and Steve Gut-
tenberg. Finally, the film is
an American version of a
French smash.
This is one that couldn't
miss, and it doesn't. The scene
where two of the men are con-
fronted with changing the
diaper of the baby which has
just been left on their
doorstep is hilarious.
Yes, showing men as idiots
in handling a baby is a clich-
ed idea and one which most of
us males with a modicum of
common sense resent. But it
is handled in a fresh and fun-
ny way and I did laugh hard,
in spite of my reservations.
This American version is
almost totally faithful to the
French original, except for
changes dictated by the dif-
ferences in culture. The
French version had more sex,
was more sophisticated in the
relationships, and much less
sentimental and square in
the denouement.
It's a fun movie in French or
English, and will provide am-
ple entertainment in either
language.
