"Speaking of atmosphere,
by the way, have you been to
Sebastian's yet in Somerset
Mall? It is a feast for the eyes
with its sophisticated
Manhattan chic. It's tempting
to dawdle over appetizers
while you listen to nostalgic,
sensuous music on the piano.
The escargot is deliciously dif-
ferent, not served in shells
but rolled into crusty puff
pastries. And you'd never
guess that delicious concoc-
tion you may order is lox and
onion with a sour cream base.
The presentation on the
plate is attractive, but some of
the shrimp entrees were rated
about a 6 from some of our
party. The fish was fresh and
delicately prepared. The veal,
heavy on the garlic, was rated
a 7. The pastry cart is a
beautiful visual delight but
some of the offerings look bet-
ter than they taste."
A MAN WHO happened to
find himself in a strange
neighborhood at lunch time
entered a restaurant and
ordered a plate of borscht .. .
"No borscht," said the waiter.
"No soup of any kind." . . .
"Then I'll have some roast
chicken," said - the customer
. . . "We have no chicken,"
said the waiter firmly .. .
"How about fish?" . . . "We're
out of that too." . . . The
customer sighed, "All right,
then just bring me a glass of
tea and a roll." . . . "Good
Heavens!" the waiter ex-
claimed. "A man with an ap-
petite like yours I never saw
in my whole life!"
AMONG the prime secrets
at Rialto Restaurant, Wood-
ward and Nine Mile in Fern-
dale, is a meat sauce owners
Charlie and Frank Pappas
put on their spaghetti . . . It
has its own thickness . . .
without the use of corn starch
. . . and if there is any, it's
very little . . . This is pure
tomatoes and meat.
The recipe is one given to
Charlie when he worked
years back at the old Book-
Cadillac Hotel . . . Charlie
was a waiter then and Victor
Bianco, assistant chef to Ex-
ecutive Chef Mark Schmidt,
revealed the secret that was a
famed Book-Cadillac delight.
Thanksgiving Day is al-
ways a biggie at Rialto .. .
and this past one wasn't any
different than others . . .
Charlie and Frank cut up fif-
teen 32-pound fresh turkeys
for their holiday customers.
