The attack was by a lone terrorist who flew south from Lebanon into Israel on a motorized hang-glider. He landed in a thorn field near the Gibor landing-strip east of Kiryat Shemona and attack- ed an IDF vehicle, wounding a woman soldier and killing the officer who was driving. The terrorist then made his way to the army camp about 200 yards away, where he killed five soldiers in a sur- prise attack and wounded six before one of the wounded soldiers fatally shot him. The deceased soldiers were buried in separate funerals. Two of the seven soldiers wounded in the attack were reported to be in a serious condition. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Shomron has announced that the IDF will investigate why the troops were surprised, despite detection of the motorcycle-like sound of hang-glider as it passed over the security zone that stretches north of Israel's border with Lebanon. He said it already appears that the single sentry at the tent camp's entrance — a rope strung between two barrels — failed to act in the proper manner to halt the intruder. Newspapers report that he ran when a grenade was hurled toward him. Shomron said there was no doubt that the attack had been carried out by Ahmed Jabreel's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine- General Command, which had trained on hang-gliders in Syria. He said the flight probably embarked from the Syrian- controlled Lake Karoun region in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The PFLP-General Com- mand is known to specialize in brutal terror acts and neglect political activity. Jabreel, 52, is a former cap- tain in the Syrian engineer- ing corps. He split in 1968 from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, headed by Dr. George Habash, and has since acted under Syrian patronage, receiving additional aid and training from Libya. The organization is known to plan its operations careful- ly. Therefore, its known opera- tions are few, but dramatic. The last two attacks attri- buted to the Jabreel group date back to 1974: the murder of 18 Israelis in Kiryat Shemona; and the killing of two members of Kibbutz Shamir and a foreign volun- teer in that same year. Ancient Human Bones Found Jerusalem (JTA) — Human bones which experts date back some 8,000 years were found at the site of an ancient submerged village on the Mediterranean seabed off- shore from the town of Atilt, it was reported last week. The discovery was made by Prof. Avraham Ronen and Ehud Galili of Haifa Univer- sity. They were spotted by the marine archaeologists after a storm that cleared away layers of sand which had covered them. They were reported in an "excellent state of preservation." Examination of one of the skeletons detected signs that the person suffered from an ear infection common among sea divers. If this is proven correct, it would be the first evidence that men dived for fish in pre-historic times. The village itself, under 14 meters of water, was dis- covered four years ago. It is believed to have met its fate at the end of the last ice age when rising waters flooded the coastal plane. UAHC Pushes Smoking Ban New York — The 1.3-million member Union of American Hebrew Congregations has called on its 810 Reform synagogues in the United States and Canada to "ban smoking entirely" at all of their meetings, functions and workplaces. In a resolution adopted at its recently-concluded na- tional biennial convention, the Reform Jewish group also called on the United States and Canada "to phase out subsidies to the tobacco in- dustry, while taking steps to cushion adverse economic im- pact."
