HOBBIES: "Do you think I have time for
hobbies? Well, I do counsel families.".

BACKGROUND: Rabbi Moshe Polter, one
of six children, was born in 1938 in
Belgium. His family escaped the
Holocaust by first going to France and
then walking to Switzerland during the
war years. In 1951, the family
emigrated to Canada, two weeks before
his bar mitzvah. At 16, he attended the
Lubavitcher yeshiva in New York and
later the rabbinic college in Montreal.
In 1959 he began teaching at the Beth
Yehuda Schools. His educational •
methods evolved when he began
teaching Russian youngsters Hebrew.
through the development of his
individual instruction program,
immigrants learned Hebrew quickly.
Educators and students praise his
program. "I'm no longer suffering from
`lost in prayer book blues, " said
Beverly Englehardt, a psychotherapist.
Rabbi Polter enjoys teaching and is most
proud of giving people a positive feeling
about Yiddishkeit.
