Vienna (JTA) — Michael
Graff, a leading campaigner
for Kurt Waldheim in his suc-
cessful bid for the Austrian
presidency last year, resigned
as secretary general of the
conservative Peoples Party
last week.
His departure came amid a
storm of protests over an anti-
Semitic remark attributed to
him in an interview publish-
ed in the French news
magazine L'Express.
According to the interview,
reported by the Austrian
media, Graff said, "So long as
it is not proven that
(Waldheim) strangled six
Jews with his own hands, no
problem!'
He was commenting on the
expected findings of a six-
member international com-
mission of historians funded
by the Austrian government,
which is examining charges
by the World Jewish Congress
(WJC) that Waldheim was in-

cealed his war-time service
for 40 years. He was forced to
admit it when exposed by the
WJC, but insists he was in no
way involved in atrocities.
Nevertheless, Waldheim has
been placed on the U.S.
Department of Justice's
Watch List of aliens barred
from entry into the United

Graff, in a television inter-
view, said he was quoted out
of context. He asked forgive-
ness from all who were offend-

incident was not serious
enough for him to resign from
his party post. It is not yet
clear what or who prompted
him to resign.
