GORNBEINO

Avery Saltzman

chasing wife. He's devious, he
cheats on his wife, but the ex-
tra enthusiasm that
Saltzman puts into the Wazir
really makes him a likeable
guy, well, sort of. That en-
thusiasm is returned in kind
by the applause of an ap-
preciative audience.
Ultimately, Saltzman says
he has a special feeling for
comedy. "You get an im-
mediate response from the
audience." He also noticed
that different audiences react
differently. American au-
diences, he said, "are more us-
ed to big lavish shows, they're
more vocal in their response.
They expect more." Canadian
audiences expect more from
the actors.
Saltzman studied at York
University in Toronto. He
dropped out of the theater
program after his third year
because he was getting so
many roles. Performing is not
new to Saltzman, who also is
an accomplished pianist. His
father performs with a group
called Clowns Unlimited, an
organization that puts on
shows, particularly for senior
citizens. Often, Saltzman
would join his father at the
Toronto Jewish community-
sponsored Baycrest residence
for seniors, giving concerts.
In his spare time, he
volunteers for projects in the
Jewish community in Toron-
to, particularly for the
REENA Foundation for the
Jewish retarded.
Saltzman said he comes
from a "pretty much Reform"
family, and looks at being
Jewish as a way of life, and
admits to not being what he
called a practicing Jew.
However, he said his family
gets together to celebrate the
Jewish holidays.
The Tony Award-winning
operetta, Kismet, will run at
8 p.m. today, 1:30 and 8 p.m.
Saturday and 1:30 and 6:30
p.m. Sunday at the Fisher
Theater. For tickets, call the
Michigan Opera Theatre box
office, 874-SING.
