NEWS I UNESCO Applauds Yiddish Culture Paris (JTA) — The General onference of the United Na- ions Educational, Scientific nd Cultural Organization UNESCO) paid a singular c ribute to the Yiddish anguage and culture at its 24th biennial session here last week. The traditionally anti- srael world body also elected Israel to two important com- mittees — for the first time in he organization's stormy i history — and deferred two virtually antiIsrael resolu- tions that had been intro- ,tions duced by the Arab states. The 158-member General Conference is UNESCO's equivalent of the General Assembly of the United i*\Tations. The resolution on Yiddish called for the preservation of the language and its cultural heritage, and asked the direc- tor general to tap extra- budgetary sources for the pro- ject. The resolution was for- mally submitted by West Ger- many, Holland, Luxembourg and Israel, and was supported by Poland and other Eastern bloc countries. Specifically, the director general was asked to "encour- age the translation of (Yid- dish) masterpieces of literature and poetry, especially from the period of the Shoah (Holocaust), to en- couyag,; and subsidize the publication of a dictionary of the Yiddish language, a language formerly spoken by 10 million men and women, and to organize a meeting of experts to put forward sugges- tions regarding the conserva- tion and spread of the linguistic and literary heritage and to contribute to the training of (Yiddish) ex- perts." B'nai Brith Canada Loses Court Suit Toronto (JTA) — A six-per- son jury in Winnipeg last week awarded 400,000 Cana- dian dollars (U.S. $305,000) to a former candidate for Parlia- ment who sued B'nai B'rith Canada for defamation. This is regarded as one of the largest such awards in Canadian legal history. The league plans to appeal. Luba Fedorkiw, who ran for the Progressive Conservative Party in Winnipeg during the 1984 general election, sued the League for Human Rights of B'nai B'rith Canada after a local newspaper reported the league was investigating allegations that she had made anti-Semitic comments. The newspaper, Winnipeg Sun, was not charged. Of the fine, $175,000 (Canadian) was for damage to reputation and $225,000 (Canadian) was for punitive damages. The report appeared in the newspaper after Fedorkiw's nomination and less than two months before the election date. She was defeated by David Orlikow of the New Democratic Party, a longtime incumbent. The league's in- vestigation eventually re- vealed no evidence to support the allegations.
