Akiva Principal
To Leave Detroit

Rabbi Sheldon N. Lopin
will step down as principal of
the Akiva Hebrew Day School
at the end of the winter term.
"I'm leaving with good feel-
ings," said Rabbi Lopin, who
has been with Akiva for five
years.
He has accepted a post as
headmaster of the Hebrew
Academy of Seattle. "I put in-
to Akiva what I could put in,"
he said. "I could have stayed,
but I have a calling and I'd
like to put my talents where
they can best be used."
"It is an amiable leave-
taking," agreed Akiva Presi-
dent Steven Cohen. "We're
not happy to see him go."
According to Cohen, the
school offered to extend Rab-
bi Lopin's contract, but was
unable to meet the salary of-
fered the rabbi by the Seattle
school. The shortage of
qualified Jewish educators
has driven salaries up beyond
the school's ability to pay, he
said.
"He got offered another job
at more money." Cohen said
Rabbi Lopin's new salary will
be "just below six figures."
The school has begun the
search for a new principal.
Cohen said he hopes to ap-
point a successor to Rabbi
Lopin in February or March.

Case Prepared
Against Kahane

Jerusalem (JTA) — At-
torney General Yosef Harish
is preparing charges against
Rabbi Meir Kahane, leader of
the Kach Party, for racial in-
citement. He has asked the
Knesset to strip Kahane of
his parliamentary immunity.
Harish acted on a com-
plaint lodged last February
by the then-minister of com-
munications Amnon Rubins-
tein of the Shinui Party.
According to Rubinsten,
Kahane sent letters to Israeli
Arabs exhorting them to
leave the country.
