Zionism liberated the Jew- ish people from their own powerlessness, and also from the rule of a small group of unrepresentative and self- appointed leaders, respon- sible to no one except them- selves. The provacative in- tervention of the fundraisers in the election process of the Zionist movement demon- strates that in Jewish life no less than any place else, democracy must be continu- ally defended. SEGAL V anessa Redgrave, the British actress who champions the PLO, has gained a civil rights vic- tory in her court battle with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Redgrave filed a $5 million lawsuit in Boston in 1984 after the orchestra cancelled her contract as narrator for a production of Oedipus Rex. Now a U.S. circuit court has reversed the ruling of a federal district court, which had not allowed consequen- tial damages for the cancella- tion of the Redgrave contract with the symphony. The cir- cuit court also reversed the district court on the applica- tion of the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act. Orchestra management now faces a thorny financial problem, an many familiar with Redgrave's deep affec- tion for the PLO and hostili- ty toward Israel are disturb- ed by the new court developments. It's true, but hard to unders- tand, that when Redgrave signed the contract, an or- chestra spokesman said the management was unaware of her pro-PLO crusade and the anger it generated in Jews and many others who are disgusted with the PLO's ter- rorist activities. Inconsistencies in the Redgrave story help explain the wrath she creates. Robert E. Segal is a former newspaper editor as well as director of the Jewish community councils of Cincinnati and Boston. Redgrave: Inconsistent Example: Deep concern was voiced over her selection for the role of Auschwitz sur- vivor, Fania Fenelon, in Ar- thur Miller's TV feature Play- ing for Time. Although Redgrave had produced three pro-PLO documentaries by 1980, when the Fenelon drama appeared, Miller defended the actress. "She doesn't know the meaning of anti-Semitism," Miller said. "She backs the PLO and op- poses Israel because of her hatred of capitalism." Query: Since when is Israel wedded to capitalism, and does Redgrave feel guilty when she puts her huge ear- nings in to capitalism's shrine, the bank? In district federal court, the jury held the civil rights of the actress had not been pro- ven violated. It should be noted that the symphony management did pay the $27,500 performance fee as well as the $100,000 conse- quential damage cost. Copyright 1987, JTA, Inc.
