sians who allegedly col-
laborated with the Nazis, but
found haven in Britain and
were naturalized in the 1950s
and 1960s.
Under the present law,
British jurisdiction does not
apply to people who commit-
ted crimes overseas when
they were not British citizens.
The restriction would be
lifted by the proposed amend-
ment. Canada's Criminal
Code was amended last
month, enabling Canadian
courts for the first time to try
suspected war criminals liv-
ing in Canada.

Peres Pushes
Peace Confab

Paris (JTA) — Israeli
Foreign Minister Shin-ion
Peres met for more than an
hour with President Francois
Mitterrand at the Elysee
Palace last week to discuss
the prospect of an interna-
tional conference for Middle
East peace.
The president reasserted
his view afterward that such
a conference would advance
chances for a peace settle-
ment in the region.
Peres is actively seeking
European support for the pro-
posal. He met with Foreign
Minister Jean Bernard Ray-
mond and with the secretary
general of the Socialist Party,
Lionel" Jospin. The Israeli
foreign minister is scheduled
to go to London for talks with
Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher and Foreign
Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe.
Sources close to Peres said
there are no plans for him to
meet with Reagan when he is
in the United States next
month. He will be in New
York for meetings with local
Jewish leaders and a cere-
mony at Yeshiva University.

Manure Pellets
Improve Plants

Jerusalem — Pelletized or
granulated animal manure
enriched with iron salts has
been shown by scientists at
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem's Faculty of
Agriculture in Rehovot to be
an effective and inexpensive
remedy against yellowing
(chlorosis) of plant leaves,
resulting from a lack of
available iron in the soil.
This new formulation re-
tains its effectiveness in the
soil longer than more expen-
sive chemicals now being sold
to farmers for treating the
iron deficiency.
